Survey outposts like this one get rotated every eight months, but whoever's inside has already made it home — there's a handmade wind sock on the antenna mast and boot prints worn deep into the threshold plate. The ochre flats stretch another four hundred kilometers in every direction, and that lit doorway is the only warm thing in all of it.
