What got shelved was an audio layer — microphones that would have flagged specific vocal frequencies: screaming, crying, certain stress harmonics — and routed those flags to contracted station security operators in real time.
Free, they said. The feature was bundled into the standard array maintenance contract at no additional line-item cost. I checked the fine print. Each node logs vessel ID, mass estimate, drive signature, and docking timestamp. Paired with the company’s Behavioral Pattern Analytics subscription tier, that data can reconstruct individual travel histories across a 14-month window. That product is profitable. The audio layer was a research tool looking for a business model.
The Coalition is celebrating. Privacy advocates are sending message-bursts. Several Colony Administrations are drafting ‘commendation statements’ for VoidWatch’s ‘responsible corporate citizenship.’
One standard cargo hauler’s question, for the record: if the feature was an ethical mistake worth reversing, who approved it, how far did the pilot deployment actually run, and what happened to the audio already collected?
