DO NOT BUY: Luminus Display Corp’s Spyware Screens and Wiretapping Concerns
Let me tell you what happened in my workshop last week.
I updated the firmware on a Luminus HorizonPanel 9 — standard review procedure, nothing unusual. Within forty seconds of reboot, a VoidStar Security Suite application had installed itself on the connected processing node. No prompt. No permission dialog. No acknowledgment that I, the person who owns both the display and the node, existed as a stakeholder in this decision.
I checked the update logs. The install was bundled silently inside a routine display calibration patch. VoidStar is, for anyone who doesn’t follow the adware ecosystem closely, a ‘security’ product that monetizes your usage patterns and sells the behavioral profile to Luminus’s advertising partners on the Ceres Exchange. The interesting part isn’t that it works. It’s why it works — because Luminus and their distribution partners have simply decided that firmware access constitutes implicit consent for anything they feel like doing with your hardware afterward.
They patented the install pathway. Think about that.
Here’s how you can try this yourself: connect a fresh Luminus panel to any processing node, apply the latest calibration update, and watch your running processes. Use an open packet monitor — I recommend FreeTrace, schematics at the bottom of this article — and log outbound connections during the thirty-second post-reboot window. You’ll find three separate handshakes to VoidStar infrastructure before you’ve touched a single setting.
But that’s almost the minor complaint.
While I was already in the documentation, I went looking for something I’d heard whispered about at the last independent fabricators’ meetup on Ganymede Station. Buried in section 14, subsection 7, of the Luminus HorizonPanel household installation guide — in text approximately half the size of the surrounding text, which is already small — is this remarkable sentence:
‘This unit contains third-party ambient audio collection hardware. Guests and household members should be informed of this feature prior to use of the space.’
I had to read it three times.
Luminus is telling you — not warning you, telling you, in the passive bureaucratic language of a company that has already decided you don’t matter — that your display contains a microphone collecting ambient audio for third parties, and that it is your personal responsibility to inform everyone who enters your home about this. Not their responsibility. Yours.
Let’s be precise about what ’third-party ambient audio collection’ means in practice. It means a corporation you did not choose to enter a relationship with is listening to conversations in your living space and transmitting them somewhere. The legal framework the Interstellar Assembly has allowed to evolve around this is genuinely astonishing to me every time I look at it. They have managed to construct a system in which the company that installs the microphone bears no disclosure burden, the user who bought the hardware bears all of it, and the entity actually receiving the audio is never named anywhere in the documentation.
I don’t understand the question. Why wouldn’t I share this?

Don’t buy Luminus displays. Not the HorizonPanel 9, not the WideField Pro series, not the compact units they’re marketing to Frontier Settlement dormitories right now with a ‘community pricing’ scheme that I find particularly grim given the circumstances.
