The Warthog Shell Returns: Something Between Military Aesthetics and Your Cooling Fan
Let me tell you about a screw.
Corsarium dropped the Warthog habitat shell last week — their follow-up to the C-70, a unit so beloved it apparently warranted a spiritual resurrection nine centuries later. The original C-70 came out in 2012. Old Earth calendar. Think about that lineage for a moment. The thing has fans.
I built one. Here’s how you can try this yourself.
What It Is
The Warthog is a mid-to-large processing pod shell. Aesthetic DNA is unmistakably military — angular plating, matte gunmetal finish, viewport panels that look borrowed from a Solar Defense Compact interceptor cockpit. Corsarium has been leaning into the Halo-era retrofuturism trend hard this cycle, and honestly? The execution is cleaner than I expected.
Front intake: 2x 200mm slow-spin units, pre-installed. Rear exhaust: 1x standard 140mm mount. Airflow path is front-to-back, no surprises. The interesting part isn’t that it works — it’s why it works. The 200mm front fans move a significant volume of air at very low rotational speed, which means the noise floor is genuinely low. You’re not fighting turbulence. You’re just… moving air, the way air wants to be moved.
Thermal results from my open bench at the public lab:
- Ambient: 21°C
- Helios 9-series processing core under full synthetic load: 67°C (respectful)
- Quantum processing unit under sustained render: 71°C (acceptable)
- Side panel on: negligible delta

The Titan II Ultra Pre-Install
This is where it gets technically interesting. Corsarium is now shipping the Titan II Ultra with their new semi-phase change thermal pad pre-applied at the factory. Semi-phase change means the material softens slightly at operating temperature and conforms to surface microtopography — better contact area, lower junction temperatures.
The interesting part isn’t that it works. It’s that Corsarium pre-installs it. That means the quality of your thermal interface is partly outside your control at purchase. I pulled the cooler, examined the application, reapplied with identical material myself, and saw a 2°C improvement. Not dramatic. But why is that 2°C sitting on a factory floor somewhere and not in your processing core?
They patented the application methodology. Think about that.
The 12VHPWR Warning Signal
Corsarium has added an indicator light on the cable management channel that flashes amber if your 12VHPWR connector isn’t fully seated. This is good. This is genuinely good and I want to acknowledge it without irony. Improperly seated high-power connectors have been causing thermal events in processing pods for years. A visual indicator costs almost nothing to implement. I don’t understand why this wasn’t standard a decade ago.
Here’s how you can verify it works yourself: partially seat the connector deliberately, power on, confirm amber. Then seat it fully. Green. Simple.
The micro-ATX 2800X
Corsarium also announced a micro-ATX variant designated the 2800X for compact processing pod builds. Reduced footprint, same front fan configuration in a 140mm equivalent. I haven’t tested this unit yet but the geometry is sound. Watch for the public lab follow-up.
About the Screw
The Warthog ships with a single loose screw in a small magnetic tray affixed to the interior base panel. Just one screw. No documentation explaining what it’s for.
I identified it as a thumbscrew for the optical drive bay cover — a bay that no longer exists in this chassis revision. Corsarium appears to have inherited it from a component list that traces back, through acquisition and merger documentation, to a supplier relationship that predates the Outer Rim supply restructuring.
It is a screw from 2019. Old Earth calendar. It has traveled further than most people.
I kept it.
Verdict
The Warthog shell is good. Thermals are honest, noise is low, the military aesthetic either works for you or it doesn’t, and the 12VHPWR indicator is the kind of thoughtful detail that makes me optimistic about fabrication culture when I’m having a good week.
